There are two reasons why I don’t rivalmance Fenris:
FENRIS, Y WE NO CAN JUST BE FRIENDS?!
I’m curious. I want to try for a romance with Merrill, but I might hit two birds with one stone if my Hawke is with Fenris first (meaning Merrill comes in after the break-up). Is there any special dialogue or…? Something I should look for?
I know there is with Anders, but he tires me the hell out with his politics.

I… don’t agree with this.
At what point is this stated outright?
It is stated in the game that Fenris once held affection for Danarius, and David Gaider confirmed at a convention that Fenris and Danarius had an intimate relationship. They did sleep together. It could technically classify as abuse, too, as Danarius would have been in a position of advantage. He used Fenris, definitely. But the abuse is debatable, I guess. I personally call it abuse, but I always thought of it as being emotionally abusive more than physically abusive. From Danarius’ point of view, any feelings Fenris had toward him would have been strings to pull. Ways of keeping him close and loyal. Feeding his desires would quell his doubts, and I think Fenris always had doubts, so Danarius sank his claws into him however he could. Not to mention, Fenris is downright gorgeous; I don’t doubt that he desired Fenris, even if he didn’t hold any affection for him in return.
You’ll notice that Fenris doesn’t really come right out and say it either - he skirts around the topic when he’s talking to Hawke. I don’t remember the exact phrasing of it, but he does say that 1) if there was anyone before he lost his memories, he doesn’t remember and 2) there wasn’t anyone after he escapes from Danarius because he was too busy running away, etc. That whole “I never knew I needed anyone, or wanted anyone” line.
He left what happened during his time with Danarius in a rather nebulous medium…so even before David Gaider confirmed it, it was pretty open to that sort of interpretation.
Edited to add: And his not saying anything also makes a huge amount of sense. Imagine finally stepping out into the real world and discovering what you thought was love, wasn’t? That what happened to you was wrong on so many levels? There’s going to be a huge amount of shame/self-loathing mixed in with that - i.e. how could he have allowed it, etc. And fear for what others might think. And massive amounts of rage.
I would not go so far as to call it outright rape - but sexual manipulation/abuse? Absolutely. Using intimacy, or even withholding it, can make for an extremely hard set of chains to break. Worse for Fenris, because for a long time, it’s all he would have known - of course that’s going to skew with his future relationships.
After all - he engages in a sexual relationship with Isabela if neither are LIs for Hawke - but pain from the markings aside, it’s not physical sex/closeness he fears…it’s intimacy. (Which is why he bails for 3 years on Hawke - he’s completely terrified of giving someone else that sort of power over him again, even if it’s something he wants.)
